DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham, American Watch Co, 19J, Model 1860, massive 18K gold original WS&Co case with elaborate "FHT" monogram initials set against engine turned rear, gold cuvette engraved "Presented to Fred H. Tubbs by the employees of the Telegraph Department of the C.B. & Q. R.R. Co. Dec 25th, 1870," spring loaded case rear, bow with chain guards, white enamel SS dial with distinctive script signature correct to this grade, lever escapement with capped escape wheel, gilt mvt, s#410906. Gross weight of assembled watch 93.1 dwt (144.8 g). A substantial and quite impressive example of this top grade watch with a terrific railroad associated provenance. Fred H. Tubbs' telegraphing career began in 1852 and by the 1860s he was the superintendent of the telegraph department of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, and the presentation of this watch occured during his years in this capacity. In his later career, Tubbs went on to become superintendent of Western Union Telegraph Company and continued in this position for many years. CONDITION: Mvt: GRO...
CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, near mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, superb gilt tone, minimal few micro-fine scratches, small spot of haze around one of the screws on the fourth wheel jewel setting; dial with small surface flake and small fractures near edge at 4, few faint hls elsewhere; excellent hands; case shows light wear, no dents or dings, excellent engraving details to initial monogram, engine turning detail lost at shoulders; tight bow, push shows light to medium wear; good glass crystal.
